P822 - Primordial Wisdom

January 8th, 2010

The Lord brought me (Wisdom) forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began. (Proverbs 8:22-23)

Eternity is a tough concept for me.  Tens of thousands of years is hard enough to conceptualize, but eternity... that's some crazy stuff.  I can start to get my mind around it a little bit if I think of something that goes on and on forever into the future; but if I try to think about something that's always been there, from eternity past -- something that literally has no beginning -- then my mind starts to short-circuit!  We really have no frame of reference for something which has always existed.  Some people are really motivated to sort out the intricacies of Quantum Mechanics and String Theory and and all that...

But as for me, I'm just glad to realize that God exists outside of our basic conventions for space and time.  He's got a bigger and better overview of how it all works.  And I'm glad for that.  I don't feel threatened by that or aggravated by the mysteries.  I'm just glad that it's not mysterious to Someone.

It does seem especially powerful, though, that we have access to the same powerful, eternal, primordial Wisdom that was there when the foundations of the Earth were first being laid.  We can read the Bible and pray to God for the same Wisdom that was established before the first continents were established, before the Grand Canyon was split, before the mightiest mountains ever started scraping the skies.  We have access to this mysterious Wisdom that the collected powers of geologists, anthropologists, and astronomers have been trying to equal ever since.  We simply have to ask for it, look for it, and keep ourselves open to it.  This is, perhaps, easier said than done.  But it's infinitely worth the effort.

  • Proverbs 365

  • It's kind of cool and convenient that there are 31 chapters of Proverbs in the Bible -- which fits nicely with our monthly calendars featuring no more than 31 days per month. So what if I committed a year to taking a proverb per day -- 365 days in a row -- considering it, meditating upon it, and seeking to apply it to a 21st Century context? I certainly wouldn't be the first to consider such an undertaking -- reading through the Proverbs (at least) 12 times in the course of the year and deliberately choosing a point of meditation for each day -- but it could still be kind of cool. Beneficial for my own life, and perhaps for others, too... [STARTING JANUARY 2010}
