P206 - The Key to Understanding the Proverbs

February 2nd, 2010

For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:6).

This is actually a pretty key verse for understanding the Proverbs.  On the one hand, it seems pretty elementary -- pretty "duh" -- but on the other hand, it really cannot be overlooked.

You see, the Proverbs are all about Wisdom, right?  The word wisdom (in various forms) appears 113 times throughout the book -- and this isn't even including all of the pronouns for which wisdom is clearly the antecedant.  So indubitably, the Proverbs are all about Wisdom.  But Proverbs 2:6 helps us to see further, that the Proverbs are in fact -- not just all about wisdom, but all about God.  The LORD.  YHWH.  Yahweh.  Jehovah.  The God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob.  The God of the Bible.  We're not talking about "the divinity of Wisdom itself;" we're talking about the LORD being source of all Wisdom.

I just think that's so powerful to realize.  Wisdom is not merely some esoteric concept that naturally develops over time, with age, or study, or experience.  Wisdom is intricately linked with GOD Himself.  The terms could almost be used interchangeably:  Wisdom = God, and God = Wisdom.  If you don't believe me, just go back and re-read all of chapter 2 with this simple word substitution concept.  Read through it, and you'll notice how consistent the adapted passage is with the rest of Scripture.

Pretty cool, huh?

  • Proverbs 365

  • It's kind of cool and convenient that there are 31 chapters of Proverbs in the Bible -- which fits nicely with our monthly calendars featuring no more than 31 days per month. So what if I committed a year to taking a proverb per day -- 365 days in a row -- considering it, meditating upon it, and seeking to apply it to a 21st Century context? I certainly wouldn't be the first to consider such an undertaking -- reading through the Proverbs (at least) 12 times in the course of the year and deliberately choosing a point of meditation for each day -- but it could still be kind of cool. Beneficial for my own life, and perhaps for others, too... [STARTING JANUARY 2010}
