P2602 - An Undeserved Curse Does Not Come to Rest

March 26th, 2010

swallows

Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest (Proverbs 26:2).

Witchcraft, voodoo, slander, rage -- these things have the pallor of death and fear for many of us.  They can cause a lot of trouble for those who follow Jesus.  They seem to attack us at the most central, most vulnerable parts of our being:  our very identity, our very faith.  Yet we don't have to be afraid of witchcraft, voodoo magic, slanderous outbursts, or political actions against us.  Yes, these things have power, and they need to be handled with caution and sensitivity -- but we sometimes give them too much credit and too much of our fear.  Because the truth is that witchcraft spiritualism has no power in the face of God's Holy Spirit.  Black magic cannot hold a candle to the supernatural brilliance of the LORD.  Angry, slanderous outbursts are ultimately ineffective, when carefully compared with the simple, straightforward truth.  Political protests derive their power solely from the hearts of men, which are ultimately directed by God.  God is way more powerful than any other spiritual, emotional, or physical force.

It's certainly not pleasant to engage in spiritual warfare, or to go up against a malicious campaign of misinformation and accusation directed against you.  It's not fun to have others cursing you.  It takes a lot of time and a lot of emotional energy to deal with these diversions, so our aversion to these things is understandable.  Still, we can sometimes become unnecessarily preoccupied with avoiding or developing contingency plans for the mean-spirited, hateful things that are said and done against us.  A lot of times, actually, we'd do better to just go on with our lives -- living with as much faith and integrity as possible -- and then entrust the rest to God, remembering that an undeserved curse does not come to rest.  It can flit and flutter around for awhile, yes, but it cannot control or define someone without some kind of factual basis.

Remember:  God is the one who defines us (Acts 17:28).  God is our solid rock (Psalm 18:2), our mighty fortress (Psalm 59:16), our strong tower (Proverbs 18:10).  And if God if for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?

  • Proverbs 365

  • It's kind of cool and convenient that there are 31 chapters of Proverbs in the Bible -- which fits nicely with our monthly calendars featuring no more than 31 days per month. So what if I committed a year to taking a proverb per day -- 365 days in a row -- considering it, meditating upon it, and seeking to apply it to a 21st Century context? I certainly wouldn't be the first to consider such an undertaking -- reading through the Proverbs (at least) 12 times in the course of the year and deliberately choosing a point of meditation for each day -- but it could still be kind of cool. Beneficial for my own life, and perhaps for others, too... [STARTING JANUARY 2010}
