P2130 - The Ultimate Trump Card

October 21st, 2010

The King of Hearts

There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.  The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD (Proverbs 21:30-31).

You can make all the wicked plans you want to make -- but it doesn't mean those plans are going to work out.  No matter how clever, how insightful, how creatively thought out -- there's no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.  It's reassuring to know that the will of God is the ultimate trump card.

But by the same token, it's important to note that you can make all the righteous plans you want to make -- but it doesn't mean those plans are going to work out.  No matter how meticulous, how carefully considered, how well-intended -- the preparation is all secondary.  The horse, if you will, is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD.  Once again, the will of God is the ultimate trump card.

It's both reassuring and unsettling to realize how powerful God's sovereignty really is.  This doesn't mean that we should be paralyzed by indecision -- always second-guessing ourselves.  But it does mean that we should maintain a modicum of humility at all times and in all situations.  Of course, you could try to go at it on your own and see how that works out for you; but they say that you should never bet against the house... And it seems to me that there's a reason for that.

  • Proverbs 365

  • It's kind of cool and convenient that there are 31 chapters of Proverbs in the Bible -- which fits nicely with our monthly calendars featuring no more than 31 days per month. So what if I committed a year to taking a proverb per day -- 365 days in a row -- considering it, meditating upon it, and seeking to apply it to a 21st Century context? I certainly wouldn't be the first to consider such an undertaking -- reading through the Proverbs (at least) 12 times in the course of the year and deliberately choosing a point of meditation for each day -- but it could still be kind of cool. Beneficial for my own life, and perhaps for others, too... [STARTING JANUARY 2010}
