P2124 - Mocker is His Name

December 21st, 2010

The proud and arrogant man -- "Mocker" is his name; he behaves with overweening pride (Proverbs 21:24).

You know that guy who always feels like he's got to one-up you with his stories? You know, if you're talking about that one time when you had to drive home through a freakish snow storm with drifts 4 feet high -- then he's got to tell you about his drive through a perilous storm of snow and sleet and ice and wind, with drifts 8 feet high, journeying through perilous mountain passes, with Sasquatch himself waiting to feed on any stranded travelers... You know that type of person?  Mocker is his name.

You know that guy who turns every life circumstance into a competition?  It could be comparing salaries, or weight loss, or vacation destinations, or tastes in literature, or even the amount of time it took before his children took their first steps or said their first words... He's always trying to say how much better he is than you, even if it's supposedly all in a spirit of "I'm just trying to relate."  You know that guy?  Mocker is his name.

You know that guy who is ridiculously obnoxious when it comes to sports?  It's one thing to prefer a particular team over another, but it's another thing entirely to make any type of sports competition into a personal vendetta.  Some guys will not just rejoice when their team wins (that would be understandable enough), but they will actively delight in another team's misfortune.  This sort of person will never comiserate in a situation of heartbreak; they will only use the circumstances to mitigate their own pain.  This kind of person takes all the fun out of sports -- yet he's a remarkably common figure in this subculture.  Do you know the type of guy that I'm talking about?  Mocker is his name.

You know that guy who's always complaining and grumbling?  "This music is too loud!"  "I don't like tomatoes in my salad!"  "I don't know if I've ever heard anything so boring in all my life!"  "You think you've got something to complain about?  Well, let me tell you..."  I say that whiners are wieners.  And yet they abound in every sphere of human existence.  Can you think of some person who fits this category.  Mocker is his name.

The term "mocker" has fallen out of fashion in our world today.  It's not common to use such a word to describe even the sourest, dourest bumblekins in our midst.  And yet, even without the terminology, the type is there.  Not just there, but astonishingly abundant.  These people are annoying to no end, and they never seem to shut up.  It's a mystery as to how they always find something to yap about, and why they feel it's so necessary to bring their sad commentary into so many different types of conversation.  But it's not a mystery about who they really are and what they're all about.  It's about a sort of pride, often fueled by insecurity.  And Mocker is his name.

  • Proverbs 365

  • It's kind of cool and convenient that there are 31 chapters of Proverbs in the Bible -- which fits nicely with our monthly calendars featuring no more than 31 days per month. So what if I committed a year to taking a proverb per day -- 365 days in a row -- considering it, meditating upon it, and seeking to apply it to a 21st Century context? I certainly wouldn't be the first to consider such an undertaking -- reading through the Proverbs (at least) 12 times in the course of the year and deliberately choosing a point of meditation for each day -- but it could still be kind of cool. Beneficial for my own life, and perhaps for others, too... [STARTING JANUARY 2010}
